"From the Aegean to the Ionian: A sea of knowledge"
Conservation, management and promotion of the historical archive of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation
The "From the Aegean to the Ionian: A sea of knowledge" project was implemented in 2023 for the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and aims to conserve, manage and promote the historical archive, which is mainly active in the areas of greek literature, and historical and nautical research.
The scope of the project was the digital processing and showcasing of a significant part of the archive which is presented online for the first time, and the implementation of a series of educational programs and applications, developed by diadrasis, that make use of the latest technology, reinforcing the work of the Foundation.

Deliverables

The digitization, documentation and 3D modeling of artefacts from the nautical collection that are of particular educational interest was the base on which the development was supported. The 3D objects are presented in an image recognition and augmented reality application that amplifies the printed cards included in the hybrid "phygital" museum kit of the Foundation, and aspire to offer an interactive and multidimensional experience to the student public.
The Discover the Maritime Collection application uses Augmented Reality (AR) technology to bring digitally reconstructed 3D artefacts to life. Through a series of specially designed printed cards created by Synthesee, users can view and interact with historical maritime objects in an immersive AR environment. Through an engaging process of exploration and discovery, students have the opportunity to examine collectible maritime instruments from the 18th and 19th centuries such as compasses, sextants, barometers, and other navigational tools and uncover the stories behind them.
The application is part of the Foundation’s hybrid phygital museum kit, which combines physical and digital elements to deliver an interactive educational experience for students. By blending technology, history, and storytelling, it encourages young audiences to engage with maritime heritage in a dynamic and memorable way.

The educational application titled "Walk In My Shoes" aims at the sensitization of tenagers and young adults to social issues, perceptions and stereotypes. Through a Virtual Reality app, the children can observe various conversations, in which they can intervene in order to change the outcome. The VR app is completed with a tool specialized for the entertainer/educator, that is used to create the dialogues, select expresions and characters to be included in the Virtual Environment, creating new stories every time.
"The Shipwreck of the Three Seas: Secrets, Treasures and Discoveries" is an educational Virtual Reality (VR) game.
Taking on the role of a diver, users are invited to "swim" through a simulation of a World War II submarine wreck resting on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea. As they explore the site, they search for and uncover 3D objects from the Maritime Collection hidden among the remains of the wreck.
But what was the submarine’s final destination, and what led to its sinking? By piecing together clues and discoveries, users gradually reveal the story behind the shipwreck while engaging with maritime history in an immersive and interactive way.

Designed for mobile devices, the Travellers app introduces users to notable travellers and travel writers who journeyed through Greece over the centuries. The app showcases their itineraries, the places they visited, and the experiences they documented.
The Foundation holds an extensive archive of travel journals left behind by these travellers, providing valuable historical records and unique insights into Greece’s past. Through these firsthand narratives, users can explore fascinating aspects of everyday life, culture, and society from earlier eras.
