Guided  tour application for the Archaelogical Museum of Igoumenitsa

Implementation period: 2024-2025
Institution: Ephorate of Antiquities of Thesprotia, Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa
Technologies Tablet & Mobile Apps

The project “Development of a mobile guided tour application for the permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa” was implemented during the period 2024–2025, under a direct assignment by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thesprotia. The aim of the project was the development of a mobile application designed to enhance the presentation of the museum’s permanent exhibition and improve the overall visitor experience.

The permanent exhibition of the museum, titled “Land of the Thesprotians,” presents the history and culture of Thesprotia across a broad chronological spectrum, from the Middle Paleolithic period to the late Roman era, including selected findings from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. The exhibition is developed across three levels and organized into five thematic sections, hosting more than 1,600 exhibits, with a particular emphasis on the Hellenistic period.

The guided tour application was designed to provide enriched digital content and additional information about the exhibits, enhancing the museum’s interpretive services. At the same time, the project promotes equal access to cultural heritage, as content is also available through audio narration, supporting visitors with visual impairments.

Guided Tour Application

The application offers an interactive museum tour, allowing users to easily explore exhibits and access detailed information in a simple and user-friendly way.

The system automatically detects the user’s location and adjusts the experience accordingly, whether they are physically present in the museum or exploring remotely. If GPS is disabled or the user is outside the museum premises, the application suggests remote exploration. When the visitor is inside the exhibition spaces, specially installed beacons placed in the display cases detect their position, enabling a personalized on-site experience.

This way, the application allows users to discover the museum at their own pace.

The “Exploring the exhibits” tour offers a brief yet comprehensive introduction to the museum’s permanent exhibition, covering the historical development of Thesprotia from prehistory to Byzantine times.

Through 15 points of interest, visitors discover emblematic exhibits that highlight aspects of public and private life, such as political and economic organization, religious practices, occupations, and daily life. Objects such as coins, tools, pottery, and jewellery serve as testimonies of the region’s social and cultural identity.

The thematic tour “Looking for Gods and Demons in the Museum” invites children on an exploratory journey through the museum galleries. Across 8 selected points of interest, young visitors discover gods, demons, and mythological creatures hidden within the exhibits.

Through this experience, children learn about the role of gods in everyday life and are encouraged to connect mythology with the objects they observe, transforming the tour into an engaging and educational experience.

During navigation, points of interest are displayed either as a list or on an interactive map, facilitating orientation and spatial understanding.

By selecting the map icon, the user is transferred to the floor plans of the museum, where exhibit markers are displayed. This enhances spatial navigation and helps users better understand the layout of the exhibition.

Each marker includes an image preview and sequential numbering, allowing users to easily follow the tour flow. The map has been carefully designed with a distinct visual identity, where each floor is color-coded for immediate recognition.

By selecting an exhibit, users can access detailed information enriched with images. In selected points of interest, three-dimensional reconstructions of artifacts have been developed to enhance proximity and understanding.

Through rotation and close-up viewing, users can better perceive the form, detail, and function of the objects. This makes the experience more interactive and immersive, combining information with visualization and strengthening the visitor’s connection to the archaeological material.

The guided tour application is available for mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, on Android and iOS platforms via Google Play and the App Store.
