Oxymoron VR

Immersive Virtual Reality & Artificial Intelligence Experience

Implementation period: 2025–2026
Funding body: Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Center
Technologies: Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The project Oxymoron VR was developed during 2025 - 2026 aiming to transform the dual-channel video installation Oxymoron by Konstantinos Tiligadis and Dimitris Agathopoulos into a fully immersive virtual world. The project creates a conceptual and sensory experience that combines artistic creativity with technological innovation.

It represents a distinctive application in the field of VR, merging immersive storytelling with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. The experience focuses on the contradictory coexistence of two different worlds: the Plastotopos and the Skiotopos. Through this duality, the concept of the oxymoron emerges: two seemingly incompatible yet fundamentally interdependent realities coexist and define one another. The viewer is invited to navigate between these mirrored worlds and reflect on the multiple contradictions that shape human experience.

Diadrasis discovered the project at the Platforms Project 2024, recognizing its potential for further development. By undertaking the production and drawing on its expertise in Virtual Reality environments and Artificial Intelligence tools, the company transformed the original static video installation into a dynamic immersive virtual world enriched with interactive narrative elements.

Funded by the “Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center – Creative Greece”, under the Support Program “The Future Is Here”, Sub-program A “Other Realities”, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Application Features

Plastotopos presents a luminous, hyperreal environment filled with symbols of consumerism, toxic positivity, and fleeting euphoria. In contrast, Skiotopos functions as its dark reflection: a world of decay, deterioration, and social inequality, where the consequences of superficial prosperity become visible. The two worlds coexist within the same space without directly interacting, intensifying the sense of tension and contradiction.

Using VR headsets such as the Meta Quest, viewers are transported into a three-dimensional virtual environment where they follow a predefined VR flythrough route. The camera path design ensures narrative continuity and experiential flow, while the combination of visuals, sound, and atmospheric elements contributes to a fully immersive experience.

The experience unfolds across six consecutive scenes, each presented in two distinct versions. At any moment, viewers can transition from one world to the other and navigate the mirrored environments at their own pace.

A specialized AI system was developed in the form of a dedicated AI Server, specifically designed to support the project’s interactive environment and the user’s engagement with it. The infrastructure integrates three distinct AI models (Large Language Models (LLMs), text-to-speech, and speech-to-text systems) enabling natural, real-time communication between the viewer and the virtual environment.

As part of the project, the AI models embedded within the two worlds were trained and customized to function as Interactive Narrative Agents, capable of dynamically responding to the user’s actions and choices.

The development of the 3D models for Oxymoron VR was based on a hybrid methodology that combines traditional 3D modeling and digital sculpting techniques with parametric design tools and Artificial Intelligence processes. The goal was to create two aesthetically and conceptually distinct yet morphologically related worlds.

At a later stage, material authoring, texturing, and lighting processes were applied to produce two different versions of the same morphological foundation: one polished, vividly colored, and reflective for “Plastotopos,” and another corroded, oxidized, and desaturated for “Skiotopos.”
