The "Digital Applications in Archaeological Sites and Monuments of the Regional Unit of Rethymno" project was implemented in 2023 for the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno, and aims to showcase and promote the intertemporal view of the cultural history of the regional unit from the neolithic era to today.
The Regional Unit of Rethymno, one of the four regional units of Crete, possesses many and notable sites of archaeological, historical, architectural and religious significance, that reveal the uninterrupted human residence and activity through the centuries. Through this project, selected Minoan Archaeological Sites (Necropolis of Armenoi, Settlement of Apodoulou, Palatial Centres of Zominthos and Monastiraki) and important Byzantine and Post-byzantine Monuments were accentuated.
The goal of this project was the documentation, digitization, showcase and promotion of the cultural wealth of the area, a series of Digital Applications and media that Diadrasis developed in the framework of the sub-project titled "Digital Applications in Archaeological Sites and Monuments of the Regional Unit of Rethymno" and the act of the same name, whic falls under the Operational Programme "EPAnEK 2014-2020".


Digital Tour Guide Applications
Three Digital Tour Guide Applications for mobile devices were developed that use geolocation, infrared radiation emission beacons and Augmented Reality technology, for the promotion of the area of Amari, the Palatian Centre of Zominthos and the Byzantine Temples across the regional unit.Available on iOS and Android.
Website
Within the framework of the promotion of the cultural material the Website of the project was created, which constitutes an innovative portal for anyone who wishes to explore the archaeological heritage, providing a scientifically enriched platform, providing access to extensive informational and documentation material, and facilitating scientific understanding and educational reading.

Interactive Map
Through the website the visitor has access to the Interactive Map, where the most significant byzantine monuments, archaeological sites and museums of the area are presented. Also, there is the ability to search in four time periods, so the users can explore the rich heritage in a way that combines accuracy of scientific information with the accessibility of modern presentation tools.Interactive Touch Screens – 3D Reconstructions
For the visitors of the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno Interactive Applications were created for use in touch screens, which present 3D Reconstructions, created using photogrammetry, photorealism and 3D modeling techniques, allowing them to be guided experientially in archaeological sites that aren't accessible and objects that are in storage, interact with them and understand different areas and time periods.

Interactive Timeline
At the same time, through the Interactive Timeline, the brief presentation of significant moments in the history of the area is achieved, allowing for a spherical experience of understanding the historical continuity and cultural evolution.Project News
